The Leifur Eiríksson Foundation was established in 2001 to fund a graduate fellowship exchange program between Iceland and the United States. Governed by a board of trustees appointed by the Central Bank of Iceland, the Icelandic Government, and the University of Virginia, the Leifur Eiríksson Foundation has an exclusively charitable, literary, educational, and scientific mission.

The beneficiaries of Leifur Eiríksson Foundation Fellowships are students from the United States and the Republic of Iceland pursuing scholarly study and research in any discipline and at any accredited institution in the two countries.
